Why Coach a MATHCOUNTS
Team?
Coaching a MATHCOUNTS team not only helps
students by stimulating their interest in mathematics,
it also provides some tangible benefits for a coach.
Here are some benefits that MATHCOUNTS coaches, both
experienced and new, have discovered through their
involvement in the program:
-
Coaching helps keep
mathematical skills sharp and provides creative
problem solving challenges.
-
Coaching provides access
to non-routine problems that can also be used in the
classroom.
-
Coaching a team, and
particularly attending a local competition, helps
develop a strong network of colleagues outside your
school.
-
Coaching returns a sense
of accomplishment as Mathletes progress in their
mathematical skills.
-
Coaching is an
opportunity to work with students who are excited
about mathematics.
-
Coaching provides an
opportunity to bring recognition to a school through
participation in a local academic competition.
-
Why Volunteer?
MATHCOUNTS provides a unique opportunity for
you to play an integral role in preparing students to
enter the workforce equipped with enhanced
mathematical skills. Individuals learn that
mathematics can be a challenging, fun and rewarding
activity. If you have an interest in math and enjoy
working with students, MATHCOUNTS is a natural for
you.
Exactly what a volunteer decides to do and how much
time he or she contributes is strictly up to each
individual.
Because each volunteer brings his or her special
skills to the program, each MATHCOUNTS program
contains a unique variety of activities that increase
math awareness and bolster community support for
improved math education. For instance, volunteers and
sponsors have used their talents and resources to
create local and state MATHCOUNTS newsletters and Web
sites, encourage more girls and minority students to
participate and conduct coaching workshops. Those
who volunteer for MATHCOUNTS experience the pride of
being associated with an effective national program
that embodies the highest values of learning and
accomplishment.
To volunteer, simply complete and submit the
Volunteer Interest Form. We will inform you of the
name and address of the local coordinator in your area
and will notify him or her of your interest in
MATHCOUNTS.
